[SystemSafety] Making Standards available .....

Hello Martyn,

I looked in the index of the book and, yes, there was no mention of
security. I am not sure why it is not mentioned - a question for the author
perhaps? (Nothing specific in the bibliography too.)

What I would like to understand is why there is little coverage of security
in IEC61508. My reading of it only discovered high level information. If
safety and security were applied based on how much coverage they have in
IEC61508, I think you may find the current balance the status-quo. A lot of
safety and a little security. What do others think?

As a general question, do engineers (or others) really need this (security)
spelt out in a standard where current knowledge does focus on security as
an important partner to safety? Can best practice evolve without a standard?

I like your point about incorporating the requirements for security into
commercial contracts. It is a good way of keeping some industries on their
toes. This could also be a hindrance as a (all?) bidder(s) may withdraw if
such a clause was applied to a contract. Is such a clause something
currently being taken up ?

What can we do about security? - It looks like students will have to do
another course and buy more books. Not ideal. However, from what has been
mentioned it seems that there could be a need for 3 courses. One on
introductory safety and security to provide initial focus and then one
course for each safety and security to better flesh things out. Both topics
require in depth understanding.

Cheers,

Daniel.

Does the book "Reliability of Safety Critical Systems" only cover
reliability, or will it also cover safety?

In either case, whal do you say or plan to say about security?

Martyn
