Good question - and not short of irony.

Checklists are far from a panacea. I hope I did not give the impression 
that I thought they were. I advanced them as a very simple measure to 
*ensure that basic sanity checks are not omitted*. I also thought that 
using checklists might help to make the box-ticking mentality work in a 
positive rather than a negative way.

As I've said before, I prefer to work on small systems, where I tend to 
think there's a better chance of getting things right. Even there, 
however, one sees frequent blunders. If a decent set of checklists were 
to prevent just some of those, then it would be worth developing it.
