FLARM (R) is a registered trade mark, not a generic term.
The company says on its home page "Originally developed for gliders and sailplanes to solve the
inherent shortcomings of TCAS,.....". Presumably the "inherent shortcomings" include that TCAS kit
is not available for gliders and sailplanes.
A description from an enthusiast not necessarily connected with the company may be read starting at
page 10 of http://www.tc.gc.ca/media/documents/ca-publications/ASL_1_2016E.pdf

Police were called this morning to a street in Vauxhall after two residents reported being unable to
drive anywhere near their homes. When they attempted to enter their street, the cars stopped dead.
Police vehicles were unable to get within 500m of the address. Officers who commandeered scooters
from neighboring children were able to continue, but were unable to identify any source for the
reported disturbance, although they reported the street empty of vehicles, unusual for the
neighbourhood. Evaluation of police vehicles' data recorders indicated an impending collision. Their
drivers have been suspended on full pay pending investigation.
