The main shortcoming of TCAS from a glider pilot's perspective is that TCAS
RAs operate only in the vertical dimension, i.e. TCAS will advise one
aircraft to climb, the other to descend. Also, TCAS was designed with
Commercial Air Transport category aircraft in mind, which do not make
sudden changes in direction. In some cases, ATC has requested that
transponders be switched off while transponder-equipped gliders are being
winch launched so as to avoid triggering TCAS warnings with airliners
flying overhead the site. Furthermore, gliders often operate in close
proximity to each other on ridges and in thermals (it's common for dozens
of gliders to share a single thermal in cross-country competitions).
Similarly, the fitment by the RAF of TCAS to their fast jet fleet has
resulted in a small number of TCAS RAs caused by fast jets carrying out
high energy manouvers at low level. See, for example,

,

FLARM was designed with the specific needs of glider pilots in mind. It
gives situational awareness of other FLARM-equipped aircraft in close
proximity, together with audible and visual collision alerts with the aim
of minimising false alarms.
