I quite liked the definition of Systems Engineering as written in the
NASA handbook on the subject.

" Systems Engineering is a methodical , disciplined approach for the 
design, realization, technical management, operations, and retirement
of a system."

A System is all the environments (over the lifetime), hardware, 
software and human factors involved.
